This replica is a new edition of my previous, much simpler jackalope cranium. The new jackalope is much more detailed, and comes with a mandible!

This highly detailed, 3D printed resin skull is a representation of that legendary creature of Old West lore, the jackalope (Lepus antilocaprus), a horned hare known as a clever trickster with a weakness for whiskey and a habit of eerily mimicking human voices.

This piece was created using a detailed CT scan of an actual jackrabbit skull, capturing the thin delicacy of the real thing with the added strength of 3D printed resin construction. Because a CT was used, rather than a typical "surface scan" which only captures the outside surface of an object, even the inside of this skull is anatomically accurate. The horns were created using a digital scan of a real pronghorn antelope skull; these are printed separately in black, so there's no paint used that could scratch or rub off, and they're fitted over a sculpted bone core, so they sit just like real horns would. The replica is life-sized. (Well, it's life-sized for a jackrabbit. I've never managed to measure a jackalope.)

Jackalopes are often depicted with deer antlers, but of course the name is a portmanteau of "jackrabbit" and "antelope", referring to North America's only native "antelope," the pronghorn. Therefore deer antlers are objectively the wrong way to go for the jackalope, and in case you're wondering the answer is yes, this is a hill I have chosen to die on.
