Jackalope Skull Replica (Life-Sized)
Jackalope Skull Replica (Life-Sized)
This highly detailed, 3D printed resin skull is a representation of that legendary creature of Old West lore, the jackalope (Lepus antilocaprus). This piece was created from a detailed 3D scan of an actual jackrabbit skull, combined with a set of sculpted pronghorn antelope horns, and is printed in life size. (Well, life-sized for a jackrabbit. I've never managed to measure a jackalope.)
This specimen is available with an aged paint effect, or unpainted. The painted version is ready to go straight on your shelf in its more life-like form, and the unpainted version is great for crafters who'd like to customize the skull themselves.
You may think of the jackalope as the invention of taxidermists, which in a way it was, but the legend of it was likely inspired by real sightings of "horned" rabbits. A virus called Shope papilloma virus (SPV) or cottontail papilloma virus (CPV) can cause truly horrifying horny outgrowths, which on some rabbits may have ended up looking like antlers.
Jackalopes are often depicted with deer antlers, but of course the name is a portmanteau of "jackrabbit" and "antelope", referring to North America's only native "antelope," the pronghorn. Therefore deer antlers are objectively the wrong way to go for the jackalope, and in case you're wondering the answer is yes, this is a hill I have chosen to die on.
